Great Awakening and the birth of Won Buddhism
On April 28, 1916, after years of searching and practice, our Founding Teacher, Sotaesan, attained Great Enlightenment. From his wish to establish a tradition that would guide people to strengthen people's spiritual power and achieve Buddhahood, Won Buddhism was born. In gratitude and respect, Won Buddhist communities around the world commemorate these events each April.
On the Great Awakening day, we celebrate:
Sotaesan’s Great Awakening
The Beginning of Won Buddhism
The spiritual birthday of our reverends and ourselves
And… the great potential in each of us for our own great awakening
