Meditation & Dharma
- 10:00 – 11:30 am, Saturday
- 10:00 – 11:30 am, Sunday
This program includes several types of meditation practice led by the Kyomunims (Won Buddhist priests) and experienced lay practitioners. We begin with movement followed by 20 minutes of sitting meditation. Sutra and prayer chanting follow (in both English and Korean) then lying down meditation and perhaps a Qi Gong exercise. We end with a dharma talk and a period of reflection. Afterward, there is tea and fellowship. Since this program includes instructions and guided meditation, if you are new to our temple, this is a good place to start.
Morning Meditation (7 days a week)
6:30 – 7:30 am - Each day there is 30 minutes of silent sitting meditation, then short chanting and yoga stretching. Starting your day with meditation helps to set the tone of your day in mindfulness and clarity.
Tuesday Morning Meditation
7:30 – 8:30 am - This additional morning meditation includes 30 minutes of silent sitting meditation, then short chanting and yoga stretching.
Tuesday Evening Meditation
7:30 – 8:30 pm - We gather on Tuesday evening to close our day in meditation. This meditation practice includes stretching, sitting, lying down, and chanting. We usually chant “Na-Mu Ah-Mee Tah-Bul,” a classical Buddhist chant meaning “May I return to my true nature within.”
Sunday Children’s Meditation
10:00 – 11:45 am - Children (age 5 and up) practice their own meditation in the residence while parents are in meditation and dharma service in the Temple. We begin with different forms of meditation such as chanting, lying down, quiet sitting, and stretching yoga. Meditation periods are brief (1-5min) interspersed with activity. The second half is composed of arts, crafts, indoor or outdoor activities. This program is guided by one of the reverends or an experienced volunteer. Snacks are provided. If your child has specific dietary needs, please send your child with his/her own snack.
